Cabeça de Alface formed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1970s with Oswaldo Montenegro, Jorge Mautner, and Ricardo Vilas. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1979, and they had a hit with 'A Lua,' a song with ethereal harmonies and lyrics about the moon illuminating someone. Their sound mixed Brazilian folk, psychedelic rock, and progressive influences, which wasn't an easy sell to record labels at first.
The band had to leave Brazil for a while. They kept making music through lineup changes that brought in Fábio Jr. and Roberto Frejat, and released albums like 'Roda Viva' in 1981 and 'Não Se Preocupe, o Futuro Vai Cuidar de Você' in 1984.
Later songs like 'Lactuca Sativa,' 'Zé Boquinha,' and 'Sopa de Café' show their range, from playful to more introspective. Their lyrics often dealt with love and loss, and their music incorporated jazz, samba, and reggae elements as they went along.
