The band's lineup included Maurício Maestro on bass and vocals, Bira on drums, Zé Luiz on percussion, Dinho on guitar, and Hamlet on tenor sax.
Their sound pulled from Afro-Brazilian rhythms and rock, with later albums bringing in touches of funk and jazz. The track "Azaração" became their biggest hit, a song about superstition and bad luck that got people dancing. Other songs like "Karen" and "Nossa Discoteca" also found an audience.
Cabelo Veludo's music and Afrocentric perspective sometimes drew criticism during Brazil's political tensions in the 1970s. They kept recording through that period, and "Azaração" in particular stuck around in Brazilian popular culture long after.
