Cabongue formed in Mindelo, São Vicente in 1979 with Luis Morais on vocals and guitar, Pedro Lima on bass, Zé Rui de Pina on drums, and Betú de Morais on guitar. Their early performances faced resistance in a conservative society, and their lyrics criticizing the authoritarian regime were considered subversive.
Their song "Otoridade" drew particular scrutiny from authorities for its indictment of police brutality, leading to radio bans and threats. Despite this, the band continued performing and developed a dedicated following. Their music incorporated Afro-beat influences alongside rock, funk, and soul elements while maintaining a focus on social justice themes.
Luis Morais passed away in 2005, but the other members remained active in the band. Their discography includes albums like "Nha Terra" (1985), "O Povo" (1987), "Resistência" (1989), and "Solidariedade" (1992), along with songs such as "Acorde," "Fusquinha," and "Notícia."
