Cabra da Peste

Cabra da Peste formed in 1995 in Fortaleza, Ceará, with vocalist Zé Brown and accordionist Adelson Viana. They played forró, a traditional northeastern Brazilian genre, but gave it a rougher edge and lyrics that talked about poverty and inequality. Their early shows sometimes met resistance from more conservative forrò listeners.

Their 1997 album 'Forró Pesado' brought them wider attention, largely because of the song 'Lampião Vingador.' The track tells the story of a legendary outlaw who fought for the poor, and it connected with a lot of people across Brazil. It also drew criticism from some politicians and religious figures who said it celebrated violence.

They kept recording after that, putting out a string of albums that mixed traditional forró rhythms with their own heavier, more direct approach.
