Caitiff o Proibido

Caitiff o Proibido formed in São Paulo in the late 1980s, a Brazilian rock band led by vocalist and lyricist Valderez de Souza. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1988, mixing gothic rock and post-punk with some Brazilian traditional sounds. The lyrics tended toward existential themes, which gave their music a particular introspective quality.

They followed that debut with several more albums through the 1990s. In 1992 they released "Vazio do Apartamento," a song that became something of an anthem for listeners who connected with its poetic melancholy. Later records like 1995's "O Cavalo Preto" and 2000's "Absoluto" continued in a similar vein, atmospheric, brooding rock that didn't shy away from darker subject matter.

Some critics found their worldview too bleak, but the band maintained a loyal following who appreciated the honesty in their work. They were one of those groups that carved out a specific space in Brazil's rock scene without ever smoothing out their rougher edges.
