Calango Tião formed in Petrolina in 1996, with Cleberson on vocals and guitar, Marcelo on bass, and Evaldo on drums. They put out their debut album 'Casa de Calango' in 1998, which helped them find a national audience. That core lineup of Cleberson, Marcelo, and Evaldo stayed together for years.
Their music worked with sertanejo rhythms, and songs like 'Canário Cantador' and 'Nina' became part of their set. They recorded several albums after that first one, including 'Nem Pense em Fugir' in 1999, 'De Repente' in 2001, and a live album from Salvador in 2004. In 2007, they dealt with some plagiarism claims, but kept going.
