Cali-se

Cali-se came out of Rio de Janeiro's favelas as a trio with Léo Moreira on vocals, Vitor Hugo on bass, and Gabriel Serra on drums. Their name, a colloquial expression meaning 'to give up,' was a statement in itself. They put out their debut album 'Caveirão' in 2013, and the title track became an immediate sensation, a raw, haunting anthem about oppressive police units that struck a nerve.

Their lyrics were direct, often laced with profanity and political commentary, and their sound pulled from samba, funk, and rap without settling neatly into any one genre. That approach drew both admiration and criticism, leading to censorship and legal challenges. Another track, 'Presa Perto Do Céu,' shows their style: blunt, rhythmic, and grounded in the realities of their community.

They kept releasing music through the 2010s and into the 2020s, with albums like 'Tropa do Bruxo' in 2015 and 'Só o Amor' in 2022. For many listeners, their songs became a kind of rallying cry, giving voice to frustrations that weren't often heard in mainstream Brazilian music.
