Calibre 23 formed in Salvador, Bahia in 2005 around vocalist Joabe Reis. They were joined by guitarists Fabio e Dito, bassist Renilton Barbosa, and drummer Anderson Reis. Their music often carries religious themes, which drew some criticism early on, but they kept making the music they wanted to make.
Their debut album 'Fé em Deus Que Ele É Justo' came out in 2008 and found a substantial audience. They followed it with albums like 'Coragem pra Vencer' in 2010 and 'O Tempo De Deus Não Acabou' in 2015. Songs like 'Um Dia Qualquer' and 'Mulher' show their blend of soulful melodies and rhythmic grooves.
Joabe Reis's vocals anchor their sound, with the guitar work of Fabio e Dito and the rhythm section of Barbosa and Reis providing the foundation. Their lyrics tend to focus on faith, hope, and resilience, as heard in tracks like 'Fé Em Deus Irmão' and 'Respira Irmão'.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
