Calla formed in Brooklyn around 2000, with Aukai Ellison and Kimi Recor at the center. Their music pulled from darkwave and post-punk, creating a sound that was atmospheric and often described as haunting. They put out their album 'Scavengers' in 2002, which included the track 'Sure Shot.'

That album got them some attention, with listeners drawn to its moody textures and the band's ethereal vocal delivery.
