Editor's note

Camarón de La Isla, the raw voice of flamenco

His partnership with Paco de Lucía changed how people heard the music.

For a quick sense of his style, try 'Sin Motivos Ni Razón' or 'Soy Gitano.' They show what made his voice so distinct.

Camarón's voice had a raw, emotional quality that felt different from more polished singers. He recorded songs like 'La Leyenda Del Tiempo' and 'Las Penas de Mi Mare' that became standards. His version of 'Soy Gitano' is often heard as an expression of Romani identity.

He grew up hearing flamenco in San Fernando, Cádiz and started performing at festivals as a teenager. In 1968 he met guitarist Paco de Lucía, and their first album together, 'Almoraima,' came out in 1976. He worked with other musicians too, including guitarist Tomatito, before his death in 1992.
