Canaiera formed in the early 1990s as a trio with Paulo Pereira on vocals and guitar, Cássio Salles on bass, and Rodrigo Moraes on drums. They came from southeastern Brazil and drew from Brazilian rhythms and folk influences, with Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil among their inspirations.
Their 1997 debut album 'Para Encontrar a Paz' gave them their first real attention. The title track became a radio hit, a gentle ballad about finding peace that connected with listeners. Other songs from that period include 'A Jóia' and 'Canto Em Cores'.
Their lyrics often touched on spirituality and social questions, which sometimes drew criticism for being too abstract or earnest. They kept recording through the 2000s, putting out albums like 'Flor do Amanhã' in 2001 and 'Alma Negra' in 2005. Paulo Pereira remained the central voice as they worked.
