Canal Zero formed in Salvador, Bahia in the late 1980s with vocalist and guitarist Renato Russo, bassist Walter Villaça, and drummer Ricardo Panda. Their debut album 'Aos Vivos' came out in 1985, mixing rock with Bahian rhythms in songs like 'Intercâmbio' and 'Minha Pequena.' That record got them noticed nationally.
They kept recording through the late 80s and early 90s with albums like 'Todos os Olhos' in 1986, 'Invisible Aqui' in 1989, and 'Ultraleve' in 1992. The sound shifted some over those years, which didn't sit well with everyone who liked their earlier work. Their lyrics sometimes touched on social and political topics that stirred things up.
Renato Russo had a reputation for being outspoken and dealing with mental health issues. He died by suicide in 1996 after what the band described as a difficult stretch personally and professionally. The group had songs like 'Quem Te Escolheu' and 'Do Outro Lado' in their catalog before that point.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
