Canal Do Som formed in the early 1980s in Pará, Brazil, with Paulo André on vocals and guitar. They took their name from the Portuguese phrase for 'sound channel.' The original lineup included Marcelo Freitas on bass, Carlinhos do Acordeon on accordion, and Babo on drums.
Their music drew from regional styles like carimbó, brega, and lambada. The song 'Círio de Nazaré' became particularly associated with the city of Belém. They released albums including 'Terra Marcada' in 1986, 'Sonho de Nordestino' in 1988, and a self-titled album for 'Círio de Nazaré' in 1995.
Some listeners criticized their use of traditional rhythms during that period, but the group continued performing. The band's membership changed at various points over time.
