Canavarro formed in Recife in 1999 with Fábio Sampaio on vocals and guitar, Magno Castro on bass, and Andréa Alves on drums. Their debut album came out in 2002, and it included the song 'Abstinência,' which became a national hit in Brazil. The track's raw vocals and haunting melody connected with listeners, giving the band mainstream recognition.
They released two more albums after that, 'Sobrevivendo no Inferno' in 2004 and 'É Tudo V' later on. Other songs like 'Bilhete,' 'Um Ano e Um Mês,' and 'Falsiane' also appear in their catalog. Sampaio's lyrics sometimes drew criticism, and the band faced a legal dispute with a record label over royalties around 2005, which stretched on for years.
Sampaio had personal struggles that led to a public breakdown and a hiatus from the band. Their discography isn't long, but 'Abstinência' remains a notable track in Brazilian rock from that period.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
