Canhotinho

Canhotinho formed in 1997 in Cidade Tiradentes, a neighborhood in São Paulo. The band's name comes from founder Digão's left-handed guitar playing. Their lineup originally included vocalist André Pasteleiro, guitarists Digão and Neco, bassist Head, and drummer Gilmar.

In 1999, they released their debut album "Tortura." The title track became a national phenomenon in Brazil, a ballad about domestic violence that connected with listeners through its direct lyrics and melody. The song remains their most recognized work.

Canhotinho recorded six studio albums over roughly a decade. Their music sometimes drew criticism for addressing difficult social topics, but they kept working with Pasteleiro and Digão as central figures. The band's sound shifted from the raw approach of "Tortura" toward more experimental directions on later records.
