Canhoto do Brasil

Canhoto do Brasil formed in Porto Alegre in 1957, with Luiz Carlos Saldanha (who went by Canhoto) on vocals and accordion, Nelson Boeira (Bodico) on guitar, and Celso Ferreira (Aldo) on bass. They worked in a space where traditional Brazilian folk met more contemporary sounds, though the competition was stiff at the time.

Their 1966 single "De Porto Alegre a Goiás" became a genuine hit, its melody and Canhoto's voice connecting with listeners across the country. Another track, "Vai Levantar Poeira," also found an audience. The band kept recording through the late 1960s and early 1970s, putting out albums like "Brasil Folclórico" and "Nordeste."

Some of their lyrics touched on social and political themes, which drew attention both positive and negative. They were active for a number of years, but the details of their later work and eventual status aren't clearly documented in the materials here.
