Archive material and source history
Caninus came out of São Paulo's underground in the mid-1980s, originally called Cachorro Podre. The group had Andrê Abujamra on vocals and guitar, Pedro Peres on bass, and Rodrigo Freitas on drums. Their early shows mixed punk, hardcore, and experimental rock with a sharp social edge.
Their 1987 debut album 'Alcaralho' gave them a real presence. The title track became an anthem, and songs like 'Foda-se o Sistema' and 'Capitalista Idiotas' carried that same raw, confrontational energy. The record's explicit lyrics stirred things up, but it connected.
They kept putting out albums through the early '90s, like 'Sobrevivo no Inferno' and 'Legado de Sangue'. The lineup shifted over time, Peres and Freitas left, replaced by Ale D'Artagnan and Maurício Takara, and keyboardist Paulo Beto joined later. Abujamra stayed at the center, his outspoken style a constant through the changes.
