Capitán Cortez formed in Madrid in 2005 with Javier Sanchez on vocals and guitar, Miguel Escribano on bass, and Emilio Molina on drums. They took their name from the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, though their music leaned more toward indie rock with Latin touches than historical reenactment.
Their debut single "Another Day" came out in 2006, mixing mariachi rhythms with guitar work that caught some attention. They followed it with albums like Otra Vez, El Camino in 2008, and a self-titled record in 2011. Songs like "Follow The Light!" and "Rage Of Angels" showed their tendency to blend styles rather than stick to one tradition.
The band wore colorful hats and outfits that matched their eclectic sound. They faced some criticism from purists who questioned their approach, but kept making music that crossed borders without worrying too much about categories.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
