Capitão Faustino formed in Lisbon in 1982, with Tó Trips on vocals, Zé Pedro on bass, Manecas Costa on drums, and Tim on guitar. Their early work, like the 1984 album 'Infrasons,' mixed punk with fado and Portuguese folk sounds. The band's lyrics often dealt plainly with social issues, which sometimes put them at odds with more conservative listeners.
Songs like 'Tava Morto e Não Caiu' and 'Escola do Peão Caseiro' became well-known in Portugal. They kept recording through the 1980s, putting out albums such as 'Pós de Arroz' in 1986 and 'Tiroliro' in 1989. The music stayed rough-edged and direct, without much polish.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
