Capitão Marte formed in São Paulo in 2011, led by frontman Chico Amaral. They built a following playing underground venues with a sound that drew from post-punk, shoegaze, and Brazilian Tropicalia. Their lyrics often dealt with alienation and identity, which drew some criticism from conservative corners.
In 2019, the single "Algo Decente" broke through nationally. Its haunting melody and lyrics about searching for something decent connected with listeners. The band had released earlier work like the 2012 EP "Capitão Marte" and the 2015 album "Cru," but this song became their most recognized track.
Other songs like "Bendita TV," "No Meio dos Astros," and "Pra Que Estudar?" show their range. The lineup included Marcelo Effori on bass, Beto Cupertino on drums, and Filipe Pinto on keyboards and synthesizers. They put out another album, "A Versão das Coisas," in 2018.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
