Capoeira Aafrica

Capoeira Aafrica formed in Salvador, Brazil in the late 1980s around Mestre Ailton Ribeiro. The group brought together musicians who played traditional capoeira instruments like the berimbau and atabaque, with Mestre Ailton, Mestre Waldi, Mestre Bola, and Mestre Catatau among the original members.

Their recordings include albums like 'Orixás' from 1996 and 'Alma Brasileira' from 2003. Songs such as 'Paranaue' and 'Na Roda de Capoeira' show how they worked with the rhythmic patterns and chants of capoeira, giving them a place in recorded music.

Some traditional practitioners have questioned whether their approach commercializes capoeira. The group has said they aim to preserve and share the cultural heritage while reaching listeners who might not encounter it otherwise.

They've performed with a shifting lineup over time, with Mestre Ailton remaining involved. Other musicians like Marcos de Almeida and Edgard Jannotti have also played with the group.
