Carel Kraayenhof was a Dutch-born musician who moved to Argentina in 1950, drawn to the country's musical culture. He played piano and accordion, and in Buenos Aires he formed a partnership with bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla.
Kraayenhof composed "Adios Nonino" in 1959 as a tribute to his recently deceased father. The song's haunting melody made it an instant classic that continues to be performed and recorded by tango musicians today. While he collaborated with other notable Argentine musicians like Osvaldo Pugliese and Mariano Mores, it's his work with Piazzolla that remains most remembered.
He continued performing and recording for decades, maintaining a presence in the tango world until his death in 2012. His compositions, particularly "Adios Nonino," have become standard repertoire for tango ensembles around the world.
