Editor's note

Carequinha, Brazil's beloved birthday song clown

A black performer who turned childhood humor into enduring celebration music.

If you want to hear what made him stick around, put on 'Parabéns! Parabéns!' first. Then try something like 'O Velhinho e a Barba Branca' to hear his other side.

His 1945 song 'Parabéns! Parabéns!' became the soundtrack for birthdays across Brazil, played at countless parties for generations. He wrote other popular tracks like 'O Velhinho e a Barba Branca' and 'O Bom Menino' while facing discrimination in the industry. The fact that his music still gets played today says something about how it connected with everyday Brazilian life.

He started performing as a boy in São Paulo's Vila Penteado neighborhood, then joined the Cacique Show comedy group in 1937 where he got his stage name. After going solo in 1945, he wrote his birthday song that same year and recorded with his backing group Os Carequinhas. He kept performing through discrimination and even a brief arrest in 1960 before his death in 2006.

Milton Afonso da Costa Filho, known as Carequinha, was born in São Paulo's Vila Penteado neighborhood in 1917. He started performing as a boy, entertaining local gatherings with his humor. In 1937, he joined the Cacique Show comedy and music group, where he got his stage name meaning 'Little Bald One' due to his receding hairline.

Carequinha went solo in 1945 and wrote 'Parabéns! Parabéns!' that same year, inspired by another birthday tune he'd heard. The song became a staple at celebrations across Brazil. He recorded other popular tracks like 'O Bom Menino' and 'O Velhinho e a Barba Branca', often working with a backing group called Os Carequinhas that included musicians like Zé Bezerra and Valdir Oliveira.

He faced discrimination as a black artist in Brazil's music industry but kept performing and recording. In 1960, he was briefly arrested over alleged involvement in a communist rally, though charges were dropped. Carequinha died in 2006 at age 88, and later received Brazil's Order of Merit for Culture. His birthday song remains widely played, along with other recordings like 'Onde Estará a Margarida?' and 'Missa do Galo'.
