Carlinho Som e Banda formed in Salvador, Bahia in 1987, led by singer-songwriter Carlinhos Brown. Their debut album 'O Grande Baile' came out the following year, mixing Afro-Bahian rhythms with pop sounds. The band's early lineup included guitarist Carlinhos Pitta, bassist Luiz Caldas, and drummer Magary Lord.
Their song 'Amor de Adolescente' became particularly well-known, along with tracks like 'Não vá embora' and 'Deixa Quieto'. In 1992, Pitta and Caldas died in a bus accident, which hit the group hard. Brown kept the band going afterward.
They put out several albums through the 1990s, including 'Dois', 'Tambores e Canções', and 'Alegria'. Their lyrics sometimes drew criticism for being too suggestive, but Brown argued they were just reflecting parts of Brazilian youth culture at the time.
