Carlos Mainardes

Carlos Mainardes was born in 1950 in Porto Alegre. In 1976, he formed the band Azymuth with keyboardist José Roberto Bertrami and drummer Ivan Conti. Their 1977 track 'Eu Invadi o Mundo Elétrico' became a breakthrough, blending electronic minimalism with jazz improvisation and Afro-Brazilian rhythms.

Azymuth's sound developed through albums like 'Light as a Feather' in 1978 and 'Telecommunication' in 1980. Mainardes drew inspiration from Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream, but filtered those influences through Brazilian musical traditions. Songs like 'Fio de Luz' and 'A Lei' showcase the band's approach to electronic textures with organic warmth.

The trio toured internationally, playing shows in South America, Europe, and Japan. While some critics initially dismissed their electronic experiments, the band maintained a consistent lineup and sound for decades. Their 1990 album 'Horizonte' continued exploring the territory they'd mapped out in the late 1970s.
