Carlos Mejia Godoy

Carlos Mejía Godoy was born in 1943 in Somoto, Nicaragua. His music draws from traditional Nicaraguan folk rhythms, and he began writing songs that reflected the experiences of people around him. In the 1970s, during a period of political turmoil in Nicaragua, his songs became associated with the Sandinista movement. 'Nicaragua Nicaraguita' is one of those songs that people still recognize.

He has released more than twenty albums over time. Some of his other well-known songs include 'Las Mujeres Del Cuá' and 'Creo en Vos (Ofertorio de la Misa Campesina)'. His brother Luis Enrique Mejía Godoy has often worked with him musically.

Godoy's lyrics have sometimes drawn criticism from authorities, and certain songs faced bans. He has collaborated with artists like Mercedes Sosa and Pablo Milanés. The music stays grounded in Nicaraguan traditions while speaking to social themes that resonated locally and found listeners elsewhere.
