Carlos Sphiler was born in Porto Alegre in 1952. As a teenager, he formed his first band, Os Ajudantes, which developed a local following. In 1980, he co-founded Os Replicantes, a band that mixed punk, new wave, and Brazilian popular music.
Sphiler's song 'Angústia Adolescente' came out in 1983 and connected with Brazilian youth. Its refrain 'Eu quero mais angústia, mais angústia' became widely recognized. Other songs like 'Às Vezes' and 'O Anti-herói' also came from this period.
His lyrics often dealt with difficult subjects, and his stage presence could be provocative. The music had a dark humor and social commentary that stood out in Brazilian rock at the time.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
