Early on, he was drawn to the work of Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés, and Bob Dylan, whose lyrical approach shaped his own songwriting. His first album, 'Jalisco Park', came out in 1989, followed by records like 'Una Palabra' in 1991 and 'Como los peces' in 1995.
Varela's songs often address social themes, which has sometimes led to friction with authorities in Cuba. He kept writing through it, releasing albums such as 'Siete' in 2000, 'Nocturno' in 2005, and 'El Grito Mudo' in 2011. Tracks like 'Como Me Hicieron A Mi' and 'Graffiti de Amor' show his blend of personal reflection and broader observation.
He performs with musicians including Yadam González on bass, Yaroldi Abreu on drums, Maykel Elizarde on guitar, and Michael Herrera on keyboards. More recent work includes the 2016 album 'El Vendedor de Sueños' and the song 'La Feria de Los Tontos' with Sweet Lizzy Project.
