Carlota Joaquina formed in 2012 around vocalist and songwriter Ana Carla Maza, with guitarist Thiago Guerra, bassist Marcelo Müller, and drummer Bruno Nunes. Their debut album "À Margem de Nós Dois" came out in 2014 and got some attention in Brazil's alternative rock circles.
Their songs like "Blues Davadia" and "Don Juan" have a spare, moody quality that draws from indie rock and folk, with lyrics that circle around relationships and personal reflection. The band's sound has been compared to artists like Radiohead and PJ Harvey, though they keep things fairly direct and unadorned.
In 2016, they released a second album called "O Tempo É Rei" and faced some pushback over political lyrics in a song called "Eu Não Quero Mais Te Ver." They put out two more records after that, "Não Sou Eu" in 2019 and "Sol de Outono" a couple years later.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
