Carmelita formed in 2009 around singer Elida Almeida, guitarist Zé António, and percussionist Zé Luis. They work with Cape Verdean rhythms, especially the traditional morna style, but have faced some criticism for modernizing it. Almeida has said she believes innovation helps keep the music relevant.
Their 2015 album 'Arrudiei' gave them a wider audience, with the title track becoming well-known internationally. Other songs like 'Balanço do Ganzá' and 'Festa Na Fogueira' show their approach to rhythm and celebration. They've worked with artists including Cesária Évora and Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca.
Their music doesn't try to be purely traditional or completely contemporary. It sits somewhere in between, which seems to be where they're most comfortable working.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
