Carnivore was a thrash metal band from Brooklyn that formed in 1982. The lineup included Peter Steele on vocals and bass, Keith Alexander and Louis Beato on guitars, and Stan Whitaker on drums. Their sound was raw and aggressive, with lyrics that leaned into nihilism and violence.

Their 1985 song 'Jesus Hitler' drew widespread condemnation for its depiction of Jesus as a Nazi-like figure. Other tracks like 'God Is Dead' and 'Male Supremacy' fueled accusations of fascism and anti-Semitism. During live shows, they used Nazi imagery, inverted crosses, and burned Bibles, creating a deliberately confrontational atmosphere.

Venues frequently refused to book them, and radio stations wouldn't play their music.

After Carnivore ended, Peter Steele went on to form the gothic metal band Type O Negative. The other members pursued various musical projects. Their music, including songs like 'Carnivore' and 'Inner Conflict,' remains a stark example of extreme metal's willingness to provoke.
