Caroline formed in Pittsburgh around 2010, with Brian DeMarco on vocals and guitar and James Foster on bass. They built a local following with songs that leaned into emotional territory, though early on they dealt with the usual financial strains and label rejections that many independent bands face.
Their 2013 EP 'Beneath the Surface' included the track 'Against Us,' which caught wider attention. The song's direct lyrics and melodic pull seemed to connect with listeners, even as some found the material a bit heavy. They followed with a second album, continuing to work in that vein.
Songs like 'Where's My Love,' 'All I need,' and 'Drove me to the wall' show the band's consistent focus on personal, sometimes raw subject matter set to accessible arrangements. They never really fit a glossy pop mold, which suited the kind of audience they attracted.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
