Carpello formed in Salvador, Bahia in the 1990s, with Alexandre Peixe on vocals, Gilson Babilônia on guitar, and Marcos Ribeiro on bass. They started playing blues with Brazilian rhythms in local bars and clubs around the city.
Their first album came out in 1997, followed by others like 'Barro' in 1999 and 'Pé de Bode' in 2002. The song 'Doce Blues' from their 2004 album gave them wider recognition.
Peixe's vocals and Babilônia's guitar work gave their music a particular feel, with Ribeiro's bass holding things together. They kept at it through the usual early struggles of a band trying to find its place.
