Carpenter Brut is the project of French musician Franck Hueso, which started around 2012. The music pulls from the synth-heavy soundtracks of 1980s horror and action films, mixing industrial, electro, and metal elements into something dark and driving. Early releases like the 2012 EP 'Escape from Midwich Valley' and the 2013 'EP II' established that sound before the 2015 compilation 'Trilogy' gathered more attention.
Tracks like 'Maniac' and 'Beware The Beast' show the project's style: relentless energy, distorted synth melodies, and pounding drums that create an eerie, cinematic atmosphere. Hueso has cited influences ranging from film composer John Carpenter to electronic pioneer Giorgio Moroder and metal band Metallica, though the result feels less like pastiche and more like its own aggressive, synth-driven world.
The project has built a dedicated following, particularly for its intense live shows. While the lineup has shifted over time with various collaborators, Hueso remains the constant. Later albums like 'Leather Terror' in 2018 and 'Blood Machines' in 2019 continued in that vein, with 'Leather Terror II' arriving in 2023.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
