Carpettes formed in Los Angeles in the mid-1980s as a female-fronted rock band. The original lineup included Alice Bag on vocals and guitar, Shawna Potter on bass, and Jill Emery on drums. Their sound drew from punk and new wave, with some garage and psychedelic touches mixed in.
In 1987 they put out their first album, 'Slashed and Burned,' which had the track 'Black/White/Wrong/Right?' That song became something of an anthem for them, with its direct lyrics and raw energy. They followed it with albums like 'The Power' in 1989 and 'Below the Surface' in 1991.
Over time the lineup shifted a bit. Kim Shattuck joined on guitar and vocals around 1989, and Jennifer Finch took over on drums from Jill Emery by 1991. They kept recording through the '90s and put out 'Back from the Grave' in 2000. Other songs like 'Brains' and 'Frustration Paradise' show the same kind of pointed, guitar-driven approach.
