Carra formed in Melbourne in 2016 around Nathan Williams on vocals and guitar, Tim Ayre on bass and keyboards, and Sam Simmons on drums and production. Their music pulls from the atmospheric quality of Sigur Rós and the quieter folk of Bon Iver, but they work those sounds into something of their own.
Their 2018 single "The Sky Speaks to Me" got them some attention with its drifting melody and Williams's voice. They followed it with a self-titled album that same year, then put out two more records: The Divine Comedy in 2020 and Atlas in 2022. Songs like "Alive In There" and "Beautiful Tide" show their tendency toward spacious arrangements and reflective lyrics.
In 2021, Williams spoke openly about dealing with mental health issues, which affected how the band worked for a while. They kept writing and recording through it, though, and have stayed active since.
