Dort, wo die Nebel nie verweh'n,
wo nie das Licht sich zeigt,
dort steht seit ewig langer Zeit
ein Fels im Moor und schweigt.
Die Unken singen dort ihr Lied
in jeder neuen Nacht,
als wüssten sie, was einst hier war
und was dies Unheil bracht.
Es lebte einst vor vielen Jahr'n
ein wunderschönes Kind,
ein Bauernmädchen, jung und zart
und frisch wie Morgenwind.
Die liebte einen Königssohn,
dem war sie angetan.
Sie trafen sich des nachts im Wald,
dass sie beisammen war'n.
Er koste sie, er sprach zu ihr
manch Wort wie Honig süß.
Sie glaubte ihm und war ganz sein,
bis er sie dann verstieß.
Sie weint' so sehr, es war im gleich,
sie bat ihn: "Bitte, bleib!"
und wusst nichts von der bitt'ren Saat,
die wuchs in ihrem Leib.
Und als das Kleid zu eng ihr ward,
da kam die Sache raus.
Der Vater schlug sie grün und blau
und trieb sie aus dem Haus.
Und als sie dann ihr Kind gebar
im dunklen Moor, allein,
da war sie voller Angst und Schmerz
und wusst' nicht aus noch ein.
"Geliebtes Kind, in dieser Welt
sind wir nun ganz allein,
doch vor der andern Hohn und Spott
bewahret sollst Du sein."
Sie zog die Nadel aus ihrem Haar,
stach sie dem Kind ins Herz.
Dem Wahnsinn nahe, tränenblind,
nie fühlt' sie solchen Schmerz.
Sie nahm das Kind auf ihren Arm
und sank ins Moor hinab.
Sie floh vor der Verachtung fort
und fand ein stilles Grab.
Am Felsen, wo die Unke singt,
verließ sie diese Welt.
Seitdem wird dieser Platz nie mehr
von Sonnenlicht erhellt.
