Casa de Velho formed in Salvador, Bahia in the late 1990s, led by vocalist and songwriter Gileno Santana. Their music pulled from traditional Brazilian rhythms while mixing in rock and funk, which made them a bit hard to pin down early on. They built a following through live shows before their 2004 debut album, 'A Perna Certa do Bonde,' gave them a national hit with its title track.
Santana's lyrics often dealt with race, poverty, and corruption, which drew both fans and critics. The band kept recording through the 2000s with albums like 'Lágrimas Negras' in 2006 and 'O Mundo É Nosso' in 2009. Other songs in their catalog include 'Anseio,' 'Breve,' 'Cartão,' and 'Chá Das Cinco.'
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
