Catranca formed in São Paulo in the late 1990s as a collective of musicians working with Brazilian folk rhythms and contemporary sounds. Their core members included vocalist and guitarist Rodrigo Amarante, bassist Lílian Vieira, and drummer Rafael Castro. Their debut album came out in 2001, followed by 'Rima de Bar' in 2003.
Their song 'Rima de Bar' became particularly well-known, with its raw lyrics touching on love, loss, and rebellion. Other tracks like 'Carta ao Irmão Menor' and 'Desencontro Claustrofóbico' also appeared in their catalog. Their sound drew from samba, bossa nova, and rock, often with an energetic edge.
Catranca's unconventional approach and outspoken lyrics sometimes drew criticism from parts of the Brazilian music establishment. They released several albums, including 'Simpático' in 2006 and 'O Que Eu Quero Mais' in 2009, which showed a more introspective side.
