The Cattanooga Cats came out of New Orleans in the late 1950s. Their frontman was Jabba Da, and they played a mix of R&B, jazz, and rock 'n' roll.
In 1963 they put out their first album, also called Jabba Da. The title track became a hit, with Jabba Da's vocals and the song's rhythms catching on nationally.
Jabba Da's lyrics and stage presence drew criticism from some quarters. In 1968, remarks he made at a San Francisco concert led to a riot and the cancellation of the rest of their tour.
By 1972 the band had broken up. The original lineup included Jabba Da on vocals, Leroy 'Sax' Jones on saxophone, Horace 'Bones' Johnson on drums, Willie 'Guitar' Smith on guitar, and Percy 'Bass' Jackson on bass.
