Catuipe e Banda is a Brazilian reggae group from Salvador, Bahia, led by singer and songwriter Catuipe. Their sound mixes reggae rhythms with Brazilian influences, creating a straightforward groove that caught on in the mid-2000s. Their debut album 'O Som do Sol' came out in 2004, and its title track became a national hit.
They followed with albums like 'Reggae Brasileiro' in 2006 and 'Coração de Reggae' in 2012. The title track from that 2012 album, 'Coração de Reggae,' became something of an anthem for the band, with its upbeat rhythm and message of unity. Other songs like 'Da me Tua vida' and 'Noite de Verão' show their consistent approach to Brazilian reggae.
The band includes guitarists Diego Baía and Ricardo 'Tico' Vasconcelos, bassist Luciano Castilho, drummer Fernando 'Ferreto' Cruz, and keyboardist Gustavo 'Guga' Menezes. They've worked with artists like Ivete Sangalo and Carlinhos Brown. In 2011, they had a legal dispute with a record label over music ownership, which was eventually resolved.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
