Cecile formed in Durham, North Carolina in 1997, originally performing as the folk-rock band The Little Willies. The trio included Amy Nelson on vocals and guitar, Matt Harris on guitar and vocals, and John Stirratt on bass and vocals. They changed their name to Cecile in 2001, taking inspiration from French singer-songwriter Françoise Hardy.
Their debut album 'Cecile' came out in 2002, followed by 'Means of Escape' in 2003. The single 'When You're Gone' from that second album gained significant attention in 2004. They released two more albums, 'Love, Always' in 2005 and 'Summer in the City' in 2012 after a hiatus.
Some of their other songs include 'Drop Me,' 'Galfriend A Dis,' and 'Hot Like We.'
