Celso Souza grew up in the working-class Vila Maria José neighborhood of São Paulo, where he first heard the rhythms of samba, batuque, and chorinho. He started playing percussion on instruments like the pandeiro and tamborim. In the early 1950s, he joined the samba group Unidos do Salgueiro as a percussionist.
His solo debut came in 1966 with the song "Manotaços," which became an immediate hit with its driving samba beat and his distinctive vocals. The track established him as a major figure in Brazilian music. Other songs like "Cinzas da Paixão" and "Ave Migrante" followed, showing his range beyond pure celebration.
Souza's career wasn't without friction. Some traditionalists criticized his willingness to blend samba with other styles, and his outspoken lyrics sometimes created problems with authorities. In 1973, he was arrested and jailed over allegations that his song "Samba da Bosta" incited violence.
