Ceremonial Oath formed in Sweden in 1990, with a lineup that included vocalist Anders Fridén, guitarists Markus Nordberg and Thomas Johansson, bassist Jesper Strömblad, and drummer Daniel Axén. They released their debut album 'The Book of Shadows' in 1993, which featured the song 'Carpet'. The track's lyrics about substance abuse sparked some debate at the time.
Fridén left the band in 1995 to join In Flames. That same year, Ceremonial Oath released an album also titled 'Carpet' with a new vocalist, Mikael Andersson. The band reformed in 2000 with Fridén returning, and they put out a third album called 'In Memoriam' that year. After that, they went on hiatus, with Fridén focusing on In Flames while the band occasionally played live shows.
