Chalice

Chalice formed in Seattle around 2010, a trio that included Evan Calix on guitar and atmospheric textures, Emily Aster on vocals, and Isaiah Thorne on percussion. They started playing in smaller venues, developing a sound that mixed post-rock with electronic elements. Their first album, 'Somnolence,' came out in 2013, followed by 'Reverie' in 2015 and 'Nocturnal' in 2018.

Songs like 'A Semblance Of Sanity' and 'Memorial Embers' show their approach: layered instrumentals, whispered vocals, and a mood that leans toward the introspective. They toured in North America and Europe, and some of their music has been used in film and television.

Their work drew both dedicated listeners and some criticism for being too cerebral or hard to categorize. But they kept at it, the three of them collaborating closely on each record. They haven't put out a major statement in a few years, but the albums they did release remain points of reference for certain corners of atmospheric music.
