Chango Rodriguez was born Elio Revé Matos in Havana in 1930. He grew up singing and listening to older soneros like Ignacio Piñeiro and Arsenio Rodriguez, which shaped his approach to Cuban son.
In the early 1950s he formed his band Chango Rodriguez y sus Estrellas, which included pianist Rubén González and bassist Orlando "Cachaíto" López. They recorded songs like "De mi madre" in 1954, a track that became one of his best-known works. The band toured Cuba and parts of Latin America playing son with a straightforward, rhythmic drive.
After the Cuban Revolution in the early 1960s, Rodriguez faced some government censorship over his lyrics. He kept performing, but the political climate made things more complicated for musicians who didn't stick to approved themes.
