Chapterhouse formed in Reading, England in 1987 with Andrew Sherriff on vocals and guitar, Stephen Patman on guitar and keyboards, Jon Curtis on bass, and Ashley Bates on drums. Their name came from a children's book, which fit the slightly innocent, melancholic tone of their music.
Their debut album 'Whirlpool' arrived in 1991, anchored by the single 'Pearl.' That song, along with tracks like 'Summers Gone' and 'Breather,' defined their sound: shimmering guitars, hazy vocals, and a dreamy atmosphere that drew comparisons to Cocteau Twins and The Cure.
They released two more albums, 'Blood Music' in 1993 and 'Rowboat' in 1994, before fading from view. The band was known for being somewhat introverted and reluctant to play the promotional game, which limited their commercial reach but added to their quiet mystique.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
