Charlie Feathers

Charlie Feathers came out of Mississippi in the 1950s with a rockabilly sound that was all his own. His voice had a particular twang and yodel to it, and he wrote songs like "Tongue Tied Jill" and "Stutterin' Cindy" that played with language and rhythm in a way that felt both raw and clever. He recorded for Sun Records in Memphis around that time, though he never quite broke through to the same level as some of his labelmates.

In 1956, he wrote and recorded "That Certain Female," a song that became his best-known track. It's a slow, haunted-sounding ballad about a man fixated on a woman he can't have, and Feathers' delivery gives it a genuine ache. The song has stuck around as a rockabilly standard, covered by various artists over the decades.

He kept recording through the years, putting out albums like 'Rockabilly Rebel' in the 1970s. His style never really changed to chase trends; he stayed with that core rockabilly and country-blues feel. Songs like "Defrost Your Heart" and "Peepin' Eyes" from his catalog show the same direct, unvarnished approach to writing and performing that defined his earlier work.
