Charlie Simpson released the solo single "Walking With The San" in 2015, featuring the San Bushmen, an indigenous South African community. The collaboration drew some criticism about cultural appropriation, though Simpson saw it as an attempt to bridge cultures. That same year, he put out his debut solo album Young Pilgrim.
His solo work includes songs like "Please Let Me Go," "Blameless," and "Cemetery." He followed Young Pilgrim with Little Thief in 2017 and Hope in 2019. As a solo artist, he performed with a band that included Adam Phillips on bass, Lee Newell on drums, and Chris Pepper on keyboards.
Before his solo career, Simpson was known as the frontman of the pop-rock band Busted. His move to solo work represented a shift from that earlier sound, though he continued writing and recording on his own terms.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
