Charly El Cumbiero was born Carlos Alberto Sánchez in Cartagena, Colombia. He started playing drums and percussion with local groups when he was about 12 years old.
In 1997, he released his debut album "Cumbias con Sentimiento." That album included "Amigos Nunca," a song that became popular across Latin America. Other songs like "Contigo" and "El Doctorado" also found their audience.
In 2004, he was arrested on drug-related charges. There were also accusations that he had plagiarized the melody for "Amigos Nunca." He released several more albums, including "El Gigante de la Cumbia" in 1998 and "Dale Cumbia al Pueblo" in 2000.
